A PESAR DEL TIEMPO TRANSCURRIDO, el ranking, sea cual fuere su naturaleza, sigue siendo la herramienta preferida para analizar comparativamente todo tipo de instituciones científicas. Producción, citación, recursos humanos, recursos financieros, páginas web, todo es susceptible de ser utilizado para crear estos listados ponderados que solemos identificar bajo este anglicismo tan extendido. En nuestro grupo de investigación, y con el fin de no desentonar de la tendencia general, hemos creado uno que hemos dado en llamar RI3 (léase “erre-i-cubo”), el Ranking de instituciones de investigación iberoamericanas

SCImago journal & country rank: un nuevo portal, dos nuevos rankings

EL PORTAL SCIMAGO JOURNAL & COUNTRY RANK nace de la alianza entre la empresa Elsevier B.V. y el grupo de investigación Scimago. Como resultado de esta sinergia se ha desarrollado una plataforma de indicadores científicos a partir de la información contenida en la base de datos Scopus. La plataforma toma su nombre del indicador Scimago journal rank (SJR), elaborado por el grupo a partir del algoritmo Page rank, que representa la visibilidad de las revistas contenidas en la base de datos desde 1999 hasta 2006

ISI productivity of the Spanish Universities (2000-2004)

Quantification of the university research since the convergence towards the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) began. The university system represents the 66,43% on the total Spanish scientific production with international visibility in the five-year period 2000-04, measured through the Web of Science. Seventy Spanish universities have an internationally visible production. Of them, 36 have more than 1,000 documents. The universities located in three Spanish regions: Catalonia, Madrid and Andalusia, accumulate the 58% of the academic total

LA COMISIÓN NACIONAL EVALUADORA DE LA ACTIVIDAD INVESTIGADORA (CNEAI)1 fue creada en el año 1989 como organización dependiente del Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia. Lleva a cabo la evaluación de la actividad investigadora de los profesores universitarios y de las escalas científicas del CSIC. La solicitud de evaluación (por períodos de seis años) es voluntaria, al tratarse de conseguir un complemento de productividad incentivador, cuya finalidad es fomentar el trabajo investigador de los profesores universitarios y su mejor difusión tanto nacional como internacional

El índice h de Hirsch: su aplicación a algunos de los científicos españoles más destacados

EN UN NÚMERO ANTERIOR HABÍAMOS introducido el nuevo y polémico índice h, propuesto por Jorge Hirsch2 a su vez alabado, criticado y estudiado por los más importantes autores del campo de la bibliometría. Recordemos que la idea que subyace es tan ingeniosa como sencilla. Consiste simplemente en ordenar los trabajos de un autor de forma decreciente en virtud de las citas recibidas por cada trabajo. En el momento en el que el rango (posición en la lista) supera o iguala al valor de la cita, ahí tenemos nuestro índice h. Esto signifi ca que el autor tiene h trabajos con al menos h citas

Análisis de la producción científica mundial por regiones

CON ESTA ENTREGA de nuestra ya habitual cita en EPI se inaugura esta nueva sección de la revista sobre indicadores. Su contenido estará centrado en los temas métricos de la información en su sentido más amplio. El creciente interés por estos temas en el mundo profesional y científico, tanto en nuestro campo como en otros, hace necesaria, en nuestra opinión, la regularización de estos contenidos en EPI a través de la sección recién creada. Por este motivo, saludamos con entusiasmo la idea y le deseamos el mayor de los éxitos. En nuestra primera colaboración en la recién creada sección hacemos un breve análisis de la distribución regional de la ciencia mundial

Indicadores científicos de Galicia: ISI, Web of Science, 1990-2003

To contribute to the analysis of the situation, evolution and effects of the R+D activity in the autonomous community of Galicia (northern Spain) for the different areas of knowledge is one of the objectives branching from the Consortium of University Libraries of Galicia. To this end, among other necessary actions, we must retrieve data available on scientific output by Galician research personnel, and from there, through the elaboration of indicators, to establish the conditions existing among efforts, disciplines, organisations, territory, etc. For this reason, the Consortium of University Libraries of Galicia took the initiative of promoting an analysis of the state of the art of research in Galicia through the study of scientific indicators, in order to determine the present situation as well as its evolution since the year 1990. The main objective is to measure the situation of Galicia insofar as the generation of new knowledge and its relationship with investment efforts by analysing socioeconomic indicators that describe the situation of the resources invested in R+D; indicators of output that describe quantitative aspects of research activity; indicators of impact, showing the visibility of work within the scientific community; and indicators of collaboration with other Spanish autonomous communities and in the international realm

La producción de un determinado país y una determinada disciplina en el ISI Web of Knowledge, es un claro indicador de la investigación de calidad que es capaz de generar ese país en esa disciplina. En el presente artículo se analiza la producción ISI española en la categoría “Information Science and Library Science” de los últimos once años (1995-2005). Se presentan datos de producción por revista, revistas citadas, producción/citación por instituciones y producción/citación por autor. Este trabajo es la actualización de un par de artículos anteriores que cubrían el periodo 1995-2004

SCImago Journal & Country Rank: Journal Rankings Based on Scopus Data The new SCImago Journal & Country Rank http://www.scimagojr.com system utilizes data from Elsevier's Scopus database to produce a variety of scholarly journal and country rankings. This portal makes rankings by subject areas (27) or subject categories (295) showing the visibility of journals and countries through scientific indicators like SJR, H-index, Total docs., Total refs., Total cites, Citable docs., Cites per docs., Self-citation, etc., since 1996 to 2006. You can select a threshold for this indicators. SJR is based in the “Page Rank” algorithm in order to weigh the citations by the journal cited
